01 / Why the building leads
A permanent home changes what is possible
The restoration is not separate from the mission.
It makes the mission durable.
YES Center programs can continue in community spaces, but the former YWCA offers something different: a recognized Chester landmark with room for people to learn, move, meet, make, research, remember, and return.
The restoration story uses photographs of the actual building and treats the pool, gym, museum, library, repository, and expanded programming as goals—not completed facilities or final construction plans.

Full integration follows a history that included a letter-writing campaign for Black residents’ access to the pool.

After national support ends, the building continues under new leadership as the YES We Can Achievement and Cultural Center.
