At Yes We Can Achievement & Cultural Center, we care about what we do and strive to empower the lives of youth in the Chester community through our wide range of programs. Twyla Simpkins - Founder/Director, Current CEOO
Ms. T (Twyla Simpkins) was most recently the Interim Executive Director for the Nia Center from September 2015 - August 2016. She was invited to continue the legacy established by Delores Freeman, Nia Founder and former Executive Director.
But, being the retired CUSD teacher, community activist, collector, and historian, she was reminded of her many callings. So, when she finally yielded to her other adopted child beckon- ing her to come back home yet again, the rest is still to be written....
Currently, the CEOO of the Yes We Can Achievement & Cultural Center (formerly the YWCA Chester and now since 2012, the Yes Center), Ms T is capitalizing on her varied life experiences and city-pride love of Chester, her birth city in continuing the Yes Center's mission of servicing its' cultural and educational needs through a combination of traditional and non-traditional approaches to the Center's imminent rebirth and revitalization. Her 35+ years as a successful CUSD teacher attests to her ability to get the job done under the most trying of circumstances.
Continuing to combine her interests, job responsibilities, and community relationships, Ms T is using her very own Traveling Black History Museum as the foundation for the opening exhibit of the Heritage Place Library, Museum, Research Center & Black Repository. Add to that, a WiFi computer lab and Internet Cafe, and a tea room (named in honor of local celebrity Ms Ruth L. Bennett whose city-wide contributions were recently brought to light in a collaborative video project), fitness center, gameroom and more.
Our Ms T continues to make it happen for the Yes Center! She just asks for your continuing prayers and well-wishes and any time you have to share since 'Rebuild YES' is such a daunting task. Stay tuned as our story continues to unfold.
